Access and recreation

Coast to Coast path near KeldPublic access is at the very heart of our national parks. In England national parks came into being because the nation needs beautiful and wild country where the characteristic landscapes can be conserved.

They provide access and facilities for the public to enjoy the open air in a peaceful setting.

We aim therefore to enable as wide a range of people as possible to enjoy the special qualities of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and to involve local communities, landowners and users in this work. We need to make sure that access and recreation do not damage what people come to enjoy and to encourage people to act responsibly in the countryside.

Walker on limestone pavement in the DalesWith over 400 square miles (over 1,000 square kilometres) of Open Access land and around 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometres) of public rights of way within the National Park, there are many opportunities for the public to explore and enjoy access to the countryside.

This section of our website tells you all about Open Access and the public rights of way network and about cycling opportunities in the Dales. It also introduces the Pennine Bridleway – the latest National Trail to cross the National Park. The Countryside Code explains how to make sure you act responsibly in the countryside.

If you want to find out more about getting out and enjoying the many different recreational activities which can be found across this National Park, why not visit our Getting active section?

We are keen to ensure that everyone can enjoy access to the countryside no matter what their level of ability and so our Countryside for eveyone section also provides useful information about accessible services, attractions, walk routes, accommodation and toilets.
