Archaeological Advice
The Historic Environment Team looks after the Historic Environment Record (HER) - the index to all known and recorded archaeological sites and historic environment features in the Yorkshire Dales - and also deals with general public enquiries. Staff in the team encourage research into all aspects of the historic environment of the National Park and also provide:
- Advice to farmers and landowners on archaeology and the historic environment
- Advice and assistance on dealing with archaeology in the planning process
- Advice and assistance on the management of archaeological features, for example, the preparation of consolidation specifications for such features as lime kilns
- Advice and assistance on scheduled monument consent (For more advice and downloadable forms on Scheduled Monument Consent see the Department for Culture, Media and Sport website (opens in new window))
- Advice and assistance to individuals and societies on sources of grant aid
Staff in the Historic Environment Team work closely with the regional office of English Heritage (website opens in new window), the Government's statutory advisers on the historic environment.
There is a small budget for grants to assist in practical conservation projects and for research.
Members of staff also have their own research interests in the historic environment.
The historic environment staff organise and run an annual day school on the historic environment which is generally held at Grassington each spring. This provides an opportunity for individuals and societies to disseminate the results of their recent work and to find out what is happening.
The core digital data of the HER is hosted on the Archaeology Data Service (ADS) website (opens in new window) and can be accessed through our Out of Oblivion website (opens in new window). An appointment is necessary to view the hard copy element of the HER.
