Upper Wharfedale
Based at the National Park Authority's Grassington office, Upper Wharfedale Area Ranger Iain Mann's area stretches north of Grassington to the top of both Wharfedale and Littondale. The picture on the left shows Iain looking at the condition of Mastiles Lane, a green lane which runs between Malhamdale and Wharfedale.
Iain works closely with local organisations and the community on a range of access projects and issues.
As the Access Ranger for Upper Wharfedale, Craig Bellwood's work is varied and includes liaising with landowners, managing the public rights of way network and carrying out improvement works.
He is pictured here mending a gate.

Projects
The Dales Way
The Dales Way long distance footpath is about 80 miles long and runs from Ilkley to Bowness-on-Windemere. Over the past few years, where the route passes through Upper Wharfedale, much work has been done to improve the accessibility of the many stiles along the route. High and difficult ladder stiles have been replaced with more traditional stone step stiles and hand-gates wherever possible.
Access
New Open Access stiles and gates
The ridge that separates Wharfedale and Littondale now has a number of new stiles and gates at wall crossings in Open Access land, improving access along the crest of the ridge from above Kettlewell in the south to Horsehead Pass in the north. The new stiles are on the north-east (Wharfedale) side of the ridge.
