Progress update:
Countryside Quality Counts (CQC) focuses on the Joint Character Areas (JCAs) of England and is based on analysis of change in a range of landscape features. Most recent results are from assessment of change from 1999 to 2003.
JCA 21 – Yorkshire Dales
Significant uptake of CS agreements coupled with reductions in grazing pressure have enhanced character. Quality of woodland has also been improved through the WGS initiative. The character of boundaries and river has also been maintained as has the overall character of the area.
JCA 18 – Howgill Fells
With reduction of grazing pressure and stability of agricultural land cover the character of the area has been strengthening, while other aspects of character have generally been maintained or possibly enhanced.
